Talk title: Designing for wilderness in human habitats (Friday, 23th Feb, 4:30-6 pm, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium)

Talk description: An introduction to ecological landscape design. The speakers will be sharing some tools and insights on documenting existing biodiversity on a piece of land and designing for its succession. They will also present a few design stories from their projects where individuals who own private farms that exist in gradient zone between reserve forests and urban spaces can contribute towards conservation and awareness of harmonious coexistence with wildlife. The session will end the session with a short quiz on fauna with some prompts in it which will open up discussion with the audience.

Speaker names: Team Ananas (Sanjana Radhakrishnan and Jananee Mohan)

Sanjana Radhakrishnan - Ecological-landscape designer at Ananas. An architect by training, she enjoys working at the intersection of regenerative design, ecology and restoration.

Jananee Mohan - Co-founder of Ananas. A naturalist and an amateur photographer, she enjoys the process of observing and designing niche habitats and planting eco-systems with the hope of harmonious co-existence of humans with wilderness.

Ananas is a permaculture and ecological landscape design firm based out of Bangalore. They've designed farms based on the client's needs, the land's topography, water, soil, animals etc. In this talk, the founders tell you about their experiences designing private farms that exist in the gradient zone between reserve forests and urban spaces- that contribute in conservation and awareness of harmonious co-existence with wildlife.

DETAILS: Friday, 23th Feb, 4:30-6 pm, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium

The team behind Ananas has a fascinating background of ecology, landscape design, architecture, design and enviromental science.

In this context, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bangalore is arranging a three-part lecture series entitled Einstein and Relativity in January, February and March by the renowned astrophysicist Prof. C. V. Vishveshwara. The talks will be non-technical aimed at general audience including undergraduate students. The lecture series provides an overview of the General Theory of Relativity and its impact.

Brief Profile of Prof. C. V. Vishveshwara

After his education up to MSc in Bangalore, India, Prof. Vishveshwara received his AM degree from Columbia University, New York, USA. Thereafter, working on the stability of the Schwarzschild black hole with Prof. Charles Misner as his thesis advisor, he obtained his PhD from the University of Maryland, USA. In addition to his proof of black-hole stability, he has made pioneering contributions to black-hole physics by his study of the structures of both the static Schwarzschild black holes and the rotating Kerr black holes as well as by his theoretical discovery of the quasinormal modes of black-hole vibrations. After serving on the faculty of several universities in USA, he returned to his hometown of Bangalore, India, to take up the position of Professorship at the Raman Research Institute and later became a Senior Professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Prof. Vishveshwara has also been a Visiting Professor at several universities such as University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland, Boston University, University of London, and Universidad del Pais Vasco, Spain.

His book, Einstein's Enigma or Black Holes in My Bubble Bath is widely acclaimed with highly complimentary comments from Professors Roger Penrose, Nobel laureate Anthony James LeggettCharles Misner and other readers worldwide. It has also been translated into Italian. Recently, another book of his in the same genre entitled Universe Unveiled – The Cosmos in My Bubble Bath has been published. Information about the two books published by Springer may be obtained respectively from the links: http://www.springer.com/astronomy/popular+astronomy/book/978-3-540-33199-5 and http://www.springer.com/astronomy/popular+astronomy/book/978-3-319-08212-7

Black Holes, Gravitational Radiation and the Universe: Essays in Honor of C.V. Vishveshwara, Bala R. Iyer and Biplab Bhawal(eds), (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1999) was published in his honor for his sixtieth birthday to which leading experts in the field like Jacob Bekenstein, Brandon Carter, G.F.R Ellis, Jayant Narlikar etc., have contributed essays.

As founder-director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium in Bangalore, he has written the scripts for several planetarium programmes and directed them. These have proved to be exceedingly popular because of the simple and attractive manner in which difficult concepts have been presented. Prof. Vishveshwara has also initiated and developed educational programmes at the Planetarium including the Research Education Advancement Programme (REAP) and BIO-REAP that have been successfully training students to pursue research careers in science.
