Science Club on 11th April 2021 bet 4 pm & 5:30 pm

In this session, discussion is made on the interdisciplinary development of science, engineering and navigation. Modern transportation relies heavily on the engineering from building seaworthy ships, autonomous vehicles, and space vehicles. At the same time navigating these vehicles requires an equally well managed network driven by data. One small incident, especially at a choke point, will throw the global transport network out of order. All these and related aspects are discussed in this session.

In this session, the evolution of idea of gravity is discussed. Starting from Archimedes to Einstein, the notion of gravity has underwent several changes. The recent detection of gravitational waves is of landmark significance for physics in general and astronomy in particular.


Telescope Assembly Workshop in April 2021

TELESCOPE ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP for schools, science centres and general public is scheduled from April 1 - 4, 2021. Participants will assemble and take away 6" Newtonian Telescope with Dobsonian mount. The workshop will be for a duration of four days. The workshop will have theory sessions in astronomy and using of Newtonian telescopes etc.

A 2-day workshop for public called "Universe in the Classroom" is scheduled on 13th & 14th February 2021 between 4 pm and 7 pm. Registration fee is Rs.350/- per head.

Galileo's contribution to science is very significant in both theory and experiments. His work is spread over a wide area of science, especially in mechanics, optics, biology and astronomy. In this session we introduce his work through several experiments and related discussion.

Science Club on the topic Astronomy in Harrapan Civilization: Visual Approach on 16th February 2020 at 4 pm

The ancient civilization around the Indus valley is known for their engineering and planning. Their cities such as Rakhigarhi and Mohenjo-daro were Manhattan of their times. Curiously some of their ruined sites have astronomical secrets underlying them which only recently have come to light.

In this session Dr. B. S. Shylaja will uncover these new insights of Harrapan astronomy. What is more interesting is use of satellite imagery through planetarium grade visualization software to study the past which is novel approach.

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is organizing a 'TELESCOPE ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP' for schools, science centres and general public on three weekends. Participants will assemble 6" Newtonian Telescope with Dobsonian mount. The workshop will be for a duration of four days. The workshop will have theory sessions in astronomy and using of Newtonian telescopes etc.

Science Club on the topic "Visualization and Analysis" is scheduled for students/public on 12th Jan 2020 at 4 pm.

"Visualizations help us in analysis, inference and drawing conclusions in many disciplines. From simple 2D graphs to complex 3D representation emphasis is laid on visualization."

By taking state of art examples from satellite based astronomy, oceanic and atmospheric data to live internet traffic trends we shall discuss how visualization can be used in our daily lives, research, resource allocation, etc. Session will also discuss why visualization helps us and how human brain processes them.

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium (JNP), Bengaluru, is making arrangements to witness the upcoming event Annular Solar Eclipse on 26th December 2019 in its campus. As a part of the programme to create awareness among the students, JNP will be organising a workshop for high school students entitled "Annular Solar Eclipse" on 18th December 2019 between 10:30 am and 1 pm. "As discussed in the previous session this month Science club will continue on the second part of the theme Science behind Economics."

In this session the science behind some of the fundamental aspects related to economics shall be discussed. Is economics really science or art? Can we predict the outcome of economic decisions the way we do in science? If it is science how to take rational decisions? If it is art how to express it better? These questions among other related topics will be touched upon.

Design of low cost (around Rs.1500/-) Sun projecting system suitable for group viewing and conducting activities will also be discussed.

Science Club on the topic "Computing" on 13th October 2019 at 3 pm

Starting from ancient abacus to modern day researches in deep neural networks systems such as IBM Watson and Google Duplex, computing has come a long way. Compounded with the advances in electronics, computing today has become near ubiquitous. In this session the evolution of computing is discussed.
Concepts associated at various stages in the evolution is understood in an introductory manner. This include computing architecture, memory organisation, algorithms, etc. Emerging trends such as neuromorphic computing, quantum computing, technological singularity due to AI, etc are introduced to participants at the end.


Science Club on the topic 'Light - Nature and Applications' on 8th September 2019 at 3 pm

Light is one of the primary component which made life possible. Its exotic nature intrigues researchers to this day. Its properties are harnessed to create various applications. In this session of science club dual nature of light and its effects such as dispersion, photo electric effect, vision, image reproduction and graphics, how light allows data storage among others will be discussed.

At the heart of these changes is electronics. It drives the modern world by running algorithms with powerful processors. What ticks them, what are ICs, how advancements have changed over years in chip design, what are chiplets, Artificial Intelligence and IoT are some of the aspects which would be discussed in this session.

i) Telescope Assembly Workshop

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is organizing a 'TELESCOPE ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP' for schools, science centres and general public from November 14-17, 2018. Participants will assemble, collimate and take back a 150mm, f8 Newtonian telescope with Dobsonian mount. The workshop will be for a duration of three and a half days. The workshop will have theory sessions in astronomy and using of Newtonian telescopes etc. Charges Rs.20000/- plus registration fee Rs.1500/- per head.

Workshop on "Astronomy"

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is organizing an Astronomy Workshop for school teachers, science communicators and Educators of science centres in Kannada. The first part of the workshop will be held from 26th – 28th September 2018 and the second part will be in the month of November. It is mandatory that the participants should attend both the parts. The workshop aims at introducing very basic concepts of astronomy, like naked eye sky observations, hands on activities to understand the motion of heavenly bodies. Some historical aspects like the evolution of calendars based on astronomical phenomenon, eclipses and models of the solar system also will be covered.


Science Club discussion on 'Electromagnetism Waves'

Science Club is scheduled on 9th September 2018 at 3 pm. It is mainly targeted at the students studying in classes VIII-XII in order to develop scientific temper among them. A one-day workshop on ‘Metals and Non metals’ for high school teachers of science will be conducted by J N Planetarium on July 19, 2018. This chapter, from class X text book, will be discussed in detail while clarifying conceptual understanding, suggesting interesting experiments and activities to teach the topic.

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is organizing a half-day workshop on 'Zero Shadow Day' for students studying in class 8th to 12th on 24th April 2018 between 10 am and 1.30 pm. The workshop will cover the concepts related to Zero Shadow Day such as rotation and revolution of the earth, importance of specific latitudes such as equator, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and measurement of local time. It also includes practical aspects of observing Zero Shadow with various exhibits and calculating circumference of earth from shadows.


In view of the upcoming Zero Shadow Day on 24th April 2018, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is organizing a half-day workshop for teachers and ‘Summer Camp’ organisers on the topic 'Zero Shadow Day' on 17th April 2018.

Telescope Making Workshop

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is organizing a 'TELESCOPE ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP' for the general public and organisations from May 15, 2018. Participants will assemble and collimate a 150mm Newtonian telescope. The workshop will be for a duration of five days. The workshop will have theory sessions in astronomy, and using of Newtonian telescopes etc.

 

"Astrophotography Image Processing"

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is conducting an intensive one-day workshop on image processing, for the public with several processing examples. Examples are drawn from the thirteen Sky Photo Trips conducted by Shri Ajay Talwar, a renowned astrophotographer. Your own examples of successes and failures will also be taken up for discussion. The workshop is not a power point presentation, but involves working on actual images, data sets. The workshop will be conducted by Shri Ajay Talwar.
